Keir Starmer has promoted Angela Rayner to the official position of shadow deputy prime minister and shadow levelling up secretary, as part of a major reshuffle of his shadow cabinet.

Rayner, who has been deputy leader of the Labour Party since 2020, will now be the second most senior figure in the party’s hierarchy. She will also be responsible for overseeing the party’s policy on levelling up, which aims to reduce regional inequality in the UK.

In her new role, Rayner will be responsible for shadowing the Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, and his deputy, Dominic Raab. She will also be responsible for leading the Labour Party’s response to government policy on a range of issues, including the economy, education, and healthcare.

Rayner said she was “honoured” to be appointed to the new role and that she would “work tirelessly” to “level up” the UK. She said: “I will be a fierce advocate for the people of this country and I will fight for a better future for everyone.”

The reshuffle also sees Lisa Nandy move from shadow levelling up secretary to shadow foreign secretary. She will be replaced by Wes Streeting, who was previously shadow health secretary.

Starmer said the reshuffle was designed to “build a stronger, more united Labour Party that is ready to win the next election”.

**He said: “Angela Rayner is a brilliant communicator and campaigner who will be a formidable force in the fight to level up our country.

**Bridget Phillipson is a highly experienced and respected politician who will be a strong voice for education.

**Lisa Nandy is a passionate advocate for peace and diplomacy who will be a powerful voice for our country on the world stage.

**Wes Streeting is a rising star in the Labour Party who will be a strong voice for the NHS.”

**The reshuffle comes as Labour faces a challenge from the Liberal Democrats in the upcoming by-elections in Wakefield and Tiverton and Honiton.

**Starmer will be hoping that the changes to his shadow cabinet will help Labour to win back voters and regain momentum in the polls.
