Ohio State head football coach Ryan Day announced on Monday that tight end Bennett Christian has been suspended for the entirety of the 2023 season after testing positive for a banned substance.

Christian, a former four-star recruit in the Class of 2022, was reportedly notified of his suspension in January. He is eligible to return to the team in 2024.

“He’s a great young man, who made a mistake,” Day said in a statement. “He’s got a great family, and I commend him for being transparent. He accepts his responsibility and wants to share his story… so others don’t make the same mistake.”

Christian released a statement of his own on Monday, apologizing for his actions and vowing to learn from his mistake.

“I’d like to share the news today that I took a supplement that contained a banned substance and I will be ineligible to compete for the Buckeyes for the entire 2023 football season,” Christian said. “I made a mistake, and I accept full responsibility for my actions. I know that I let my teammates down, and I am truly sorry for that.

“I am committed to learning from this experience and becoming a better person and player. I will continue to work hard and support my team in any way that I can. I look forward to returning in 2024 and helping the Buckeyes win a championship.”

Christian’s suspension is a significant blow to the Ohio State offense. He was expected to be a key contributor at tight end this season, and his absence will leave a big hole in the lineup.

The Buckeyes will still have a talented group of tight ends, including Luke Farrell, Jeremy Ruckert, and Gee Scott Jr., but they will need to find a way to replace Christian’s production.

Christian’s suspension is also a reminder of the importance of being careful about what supplements you take. Even if a supplement is not specifically banned by the NCAA, it could still contain a banned substance that could lead to a positive test.

It is important to do your research and make sure that any supplements you take are safe and legal. If you are unsure about a supplement, it is always best to err on the side of caution and avoid taking it.

Christian’s suspension is a tough break for him, but he has a chance to learn from his mistake and come back stronger in 2024. He will have to work hard to earn back the trust of his teammates and coaches, but he has the talent and potential to be a star at Ohio State.
