SAG-AFTRA Leaders Break Silence: How the Strike Was Ended

The 116-day actors strike came to an end when SAG-AFTRA president Fran Drescher and senior negotiator Duncan Crabtree-Ireland revealed the specifics of their approach to a preliminary settlement with the studios. They discussed the “dealbreaker” moment that broke the deadlock over the application of artificial intelligence and digital actor scans in an interview with Variety.

Crabtree-Ireland claims that the studios had originally rejected any plan that would have connected the performers’ pay to the money made by the AI and digital businesses. The union then came up with a fresh plan, he said, to establish a separate fund that would be funded by a portion of the gross receipts from those items that the studios received. After that, the performers would receive payment from the fund according to how much they contributed to the AI and digital projects.

This idea, according to Drescher, is “a game-changer” and is “the first time that we saw a glimmer of hope” in the ongoing negotiations. The studios, she added, were “very intrigued” by the concept and decided to investigate it further. She also acknowledged that the studio CEOs’ participation, which they entered into on the last day of negotiations, contributed to the deal’s completion.

The SAG-AFTRA national board accepted the tentative deal on Monday. It also contains new safeguards for the safety and diversity of actors, as well as compensation hikes and enhanced residuals for streaming platforms.

It will now take two weeks for the union members to ratify the agreement. The agreement will cover a three-year contract that ends on June 30, 2026, if it is approved.
