The Iowa State Fair is a rite of passage for any Republican presidential candidate. But this year, the fair was a reminder of just how dominant former President Donald Trump is in the GOP primary.

Trump’s rivals, including Mike Pence, Ron DeSantis, and Nikki Haley, all drew respectable crowds at the fair. But none could match the excitement that Trump generated. When he arrived at the fair on Saturday, he was greeted by a throng of cheering supporters.

The contrast between Trump’s crowds and those of his rivals was stark. Pence’s supporters were polite and respectful, but they didn’t seem particularly enthusiastic. DeSantis’s supporters were more animated, but they were also outnumbered by Trump supporters. And Haley’s supporters were the smallest of the bunch.

The Iowa State Fair is a microcosm of the GOP primary as a whole. Trump is the clear frontrunner, and his rivals are struggling to gain traction. It’s hard to see any of them beating Trump in the 2024 election.

The fair also highlighted the divisions within the GOP. Trump’s supporters are still loyal to him, even after all the chaos and controversy of his presidency. His rivals, on the other hand, are trying to appeal to a more moderate Republican electorate.

It’s unclear how these divisions will play out in the 2024 election. But one thing is for sure: the GOP primary is shaping up to be a very interesting race.
