Zac Efron is grieving the loss of his dear friend and co-founder, Matthew Perry, who died suddenly on October 28th at the age of 54.

Efron told Extra in an interview on November 8th that he was “hugely honored” when Perry told him that he wanted him to play a younger version of himself in a biopic.

“It would be extraordinary to do and of course I’m still really devastated by the fact that he’s gone,” Efron said.

Perry’s death was ruled an accidental drowning. He was found unresponsive in his hot tub at his Los Angeles home.

Just days after his death, model Athena Crosby, one of the last people to speak with Perry, said that he was “enthusiastic about making a biopic based on his life” and had planned to ask Efron to star in it.

More from Deadline

“He was just looking forward to sharing more about his story and his recovery from addiction and really championing that caused to help more people,” Crosby told Entertainment Tonight on November 1st. “So he was so optimistic and happy about everything that he wanted to do.”

Perry’s friends and co-stars from “Friends” also honored him in a moving statement on October 30th.

“We are also utterly devastated by the loss of Matthew,” they wrote. “We were more than just castmates; we were a family. There is so much to say but right now we’re going to take a moment to grieve and process this unfathomable loss. In time we will say more.”

Efron’s interview with Extra is just the latest example of the outpouring of love and support for Perry since his death. He was clearly a beloved friend and colleague, and his loss will be felt by many.
